Illustration 33.

A Busy Port

The port of Sotto Marino seems to hold all the color of Italy, if we may judge from this canvas from Payne’s brush. But it also combines its lovely reds and yellows and greens im decorative patterns, making pictures for the painter’s eye on every hand. Here Payne has caught one of these pictures, transferring it to canvas with a power and a directness, as well as with an unerring instinct for essentials, that makes this decorative canvas take rank with one of Brangwyn’s very best in both color and brushwork. High praise, but not misplaced.
