The Spotnicks

As a child of the beginning of the space age I loved science fiction, anything space, and music that melded those interests. Hence, my fascination with the Swedish instrumental group - The Spotnicks. They often performed in space suits. Their sound was clean, echo-heavy (what could be more space rock than echo?).

The band member line-up changed from time to time, but the key players were Bo Winberg (lead guitar and architect of the Spotnicks signature sound), Björn Thelin (bass), Bob Lander (keyboards), and Ove Johansson (drums). Elements of their music can be found in today’s electronic and ambient music. Bo Winberg passed away in 2020. The Spotnicks last performance was on March 30, 2019.

But it wasn’t all space music… the Spotnicks played one of my favorite performances of Ghostriders in the Sky. So, yeah, being a bit of a space cowboy myself, this definitely, um, rocks.
