The Open Sea
The sea outside the Breton coast is the bluest in the world, and the merriest—so Edgar Payne tells us in this breezy canvas, which is full of movement and beauty, and which was painted with the spontaneous freedom of the subject itself. The hull of the proud oncoming hunter of tuna ris even bluer than the waves it cleaves so superbly, and its sails show a flaunting brick-red against the wall of hurrying clouds. A picture of amazing vitality and enduring charm, with a joyously vibrant lyrical note.
