The Matterhorn

Another Alpine scene of overwhelming impressiveness and grandeur in a brushwork whose particular virility of touch is native to Edgar Payne. The great mountain shows its fine silhouette against a sky delicately greenish in tone, its highest point wreathed ina nimbus of ever-changing yet ever-lasting cloud forms. At the mountain’s base the snow lies like a plateau whose upper edge melts from white into the perennial green of trees. This approach to the Matterhorn was reached by the artist on the train that runs to Gornergrat.
