The Obsessive Art Thief: Wayne Thiebaud
I just stumbled upon this wonderful video from the Fine Art Museums of San Francisco: How Wayne Thiebaud Stole from Art History.
Wayne Thiebaud (1920–2021) is famous for paintings of cakes, pies, and everyday objects. Thiebaud openly called himself an “art thief.” He candidly admitted he borrowed from other artists. His point wasn’t plagiarism—it was the idea that art grows out of previous art.
In other words: Great artists don’t work in isolation—they learn by studying, copying, and transforming what came before.
